Orlando Opossum Removal and Control
There are more than 60 different species of opossum, the most notable and most common is the Virginia Opossum (Didelphis virginiana), and it is the only marsupial (pouched animal) found in North America. They vary in size, males can be anywhere from 13-37 inches from snout to base of the tail and weigh 8-20 pounds fully grown. Their coats are a dull grayish brown, other than their faces, which are white. Opossums have long hairless tails which can be used to grab branches and carry small objects. They also have hairless ears and a long, flat nose. They are excellent tree climbers and spend much of their time aloft. They are mostly nocturnal scavengers, and often visit homes or businesses to raid garbage cans and dumpsters. Opossums are also attracted to carrion and will often be spotted near roadkill. They will also eat grass, nuts, fruit, mice, birds, insects, snakes, and even chickens. A female gives birth to as many as 20 babies once a year and can live up to four years.
Nuisance Opossum Concerns
Because they are opportunistic scavengers, they can and will come into contact with people and cause various problems. They will overturn garbage cans, get into pet food, and rifle through anything left outdoors and unsecured. They can also be a danger and cause of distress to pets who encounter these wildlife animals. It’s very likely that they will get into altercations with a possum and suffer some nasty bites and scratches. Worst of all, opossums love to make their way inside human structures such as attics and under decks or crawl spaces, causing damage to property and building systems as well as an accumulation of dangerous and foul-smelling waste. Opossums also quite frequently die inside buildings and homes, leaving the home or business owner with a terrible uncontrollable smell. This is why Nuisance Wildlife Marshals is committed to helping our valued customers treat and maintain control over any opossum issues they may be experiencing. Here are a few costly problems that can arise from a hidden opossum population that all of our customers should be aware of.

As large as opossums are, they can quickly trample and compress attic insulation simply by walking around, completely destroying your insulation and rendering it useless, costing you not only in repairs but in much higher electric bills. They have also been known to damage and destroy electrical wires, ac ducts, and other building systems within your attic or crawl space.
Spread of Disease
An even scarier thought for many is the fact that opossums will essentially use your attic or crawl space as a giant litter box. The amount of urine and feces produced by just a single possum is enough to create some serious health concerns. Their feces contains leptospirosis and salmonella, while the possums themselves are one of the biggest carriers for other problem parasites such as fleas, ticks, and mites.
An unfortunate reality of having an opossum living in your attic or crawl space is that they very often die in those spaces, or even in your walls. The smell that a decomposing possum can create is extremely potent and extremely difficult to get rid of.
