Birds (Aves) are a group of endothermic vertebrates, characterized by feathers, toothless beaked jaws, and the laying of hard-shelled eggs. Birds live worldwide and are one of the most abundant animals on the planet, at approximately ten thousand different species, with more than half of these being passerines, sometimes known as perching birds. They range in size from the 5 cm (2 in) bee hummingbird to the 2.75 m (9 ft) ostrich. Birds have wings which are more or less developed depending on the species. Birds occupy a wide range of ecological positions. While some birds are generalists, others are highly specialized in their habitat or food requirements. Birds may be insectivores, frugivores, and nectarivores. Aquatic birds generally feed by fishing and plant eating. Birds of prey specialize in hunting mammals or other birds, while vultures are specialized scavengers.
Pigeons might be delightful, if not for the mess they make. When they roost in an area, they leave behind feathers and nesting material, fleas and mites, and of course, most of all, they leave a lot of droppings. Many urban areas are covered with pigeon poop. They defecate a lot and can cover an area with piles of droppings. These droppings are not only unsightly, they’re unsanitary.
Pigeons are a staple animal throughout the United States in the urban, suburban, and rural areas. They are a bird that is not actually native to North America, it was introduced in the 1600s. Currently, pigeons are found everywhere except the Sahara Desert, the Arctic, or the Antarctic Due to their close habitation with humans, they are considered a nuisance animal because of their abundance and droppings they leave behind. Their droppings can spread diseases such as histoplasmosis.
Their diet consists of seeds, some insects, and human garbage and refuse. They are a non-migratory bird that breeds year-round but their peak breeding times are in spring and summer. They do not have many natural predators, but it has been found that large urban areas, like New York City, are harboring populations of Peregrine Falcons because of the availability of an abundant food source.
House Sparrow Removal
Has become a common pest bird that lives in close association with humans, greatly depending upon them for food and nesting sites. The birds are associated with the transmission of more than 25 diseases of humans and domestic animals. House sparrow nests often clog roof drains, plug gutters, and downspouts, and cause roof leaks. Their bulky nests made of grass, straw and other miscellaneous flammable trash are serious fire hazards—especially when nests are located in electrical equipment, light fixtures, around power lines and electrical substations.
These are noisy birds that are going to reside in areas where there are houses and buildings. They are a non-native species to North America and were introduced in the 1850s. They build their nests in a variety of places throughout human centers like eaves, fencerows, zoos, parks, and streetlights.
They are not found in forests or grasslands, but they will live in countrysides that are near farms because of their need to live near people. They are a bird whose survival is tied in with the places and food that the presence of people creates for them. They forage for food on the ground and their diet includes seeds, grass and weed seeds, some insects, and the food they can get from human refuse and garbage.
Muscovy Duck Removal
These ducks are common in Florida, and not native. They leave up to 1/3 pound of disease filled droppings per day and foul up water with bacteria. They also often destroy shoreline habitat, and of course, drive out native birds and ducks. They have been known to roost on and destroy structures such as sheds and pool screens.
Muscovy Ducks are a species that is native to Mexico, Central, and South America. They have spread to Florida and areas of Southern Texas because of people domesticating them and thus releasing them into the environment. They are known to thrive in watery habitats of coastal wetlands, swamps, and rivers in areas close to human habitation. These feral populations are considered an invasive species who are spreading non-native diseases to native species.
